With $20
In 1993, Marda Gunning spent the last $20 of their starting budget on a vintage coffee table from the '40s — picked up at the Bargain Box, hauled home with hope and a very good eye.
From there, Marda and Michael Shanley loaded up a dented 17-passenger van and crisscrossed the Southeast hunting for treasures at estate sales and flea markets.
What they built became something this island has claimed as its own for more than 35 years.
